The paper discusses the usage of choropleths and diagrams on multiscale maps. Guidelines for application of these methods concerning the selection of critical scales, construction of color scales, size scales of the symbols and display of territorial heterogeneity using nested diagrams are offered based on the basis of experimental studies. The results obtained can be used to develop algorithms for automated generation of multiscale maps.
