Abstract:
The article is devoted to an outstanding cartographer Yuriy Georgievich Kelner whose 100th anniversary will be celebrated on October 22, 2016. Yu. G. Kelner was a veteran of the Cartographic Service of the USSR and Russia who was decorated with the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. He contributed significantly to the development of thematic and space mapping in our country, worked on the improvement of contents of general geographical maps and the complex overview physical map of the USSR for higher education institutions, designed sections of nature maps in complex scientific and reference atlases and series of thematic maps. He developed methods of their geographical editing, created and edited cartographical works («Atlas of Agriculture», «Atlas of the Antarctic Regions», atlases of the USSR, «Geographical Reference Atlas»). He was at the beginnings of space mapping, developed methods for complex research and mapping of nature resources of the country on a base of space data (summarized and systemized in «Handbook on Cartography», 1988), introduced space data into cartographical works («The USSR from the space», «Salyut-6 studies the biosphere», «Atlas of the World», «Resources and Environment World Atlas», «National Atlas of Russia»). He was awarded a State Prize of the USSR ‘for the development and implementation in national economy of methods and devices for multiband photography of the Earth nature resources’ in 1984. He participated at the Great Patriotic War and was decorated with the Medal for Battle Merit and with the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st class.
