On the basis of literature data the authors attempted to explore whether global digital elevation models in the nearest future can replace the topographic and bathymetric maps without losing quality of communication and semantic essence. It is shown that such a model is not fully consistent with the objectives of relief research. It is required to improve resolution models, especially in the coastal zone, mandatory verification of their measured data, creation of DEM bottom topography close in resolution to mainland covers. However, new imaging technology in the first place – radar and laser enable obtaining new information about the dynamics of contemporary geomorphological processes.
