The traditional winter expedition of the Scientific Student Society of the MSU Faculty of Geography 2011 is described in the article. It was dedicated to life and scientific activity of M.V. Lomonosov and was held in his native land – Kholmogorskaya area. It is noted that historical-biographical material acquires high significance since it gives the possibility to discuss ideological questions of nature-society interaction, as well as vital problems of daily existence basing on the facts from biography of a particular person. The examples of maps created by students as a result of the expedition are given.
