Abstract:
The cartographic image on the handwritten maps of Western Siberia which is often inserted into the graphical frames – cartouche is supplemented with the pictorial data and textual information (requisites). The authors study the visual images and cartouches on the original maps created by the geodesist Petr Chichagov. His cartographic heritage is partially preserved in the archives, museums and libraries in Russia and France. The cartouches created by the photoengraver Gavril Kharitonov are also analyzed. The authors present the typology of the verbal requisites and the variants of their decorative design, and pay attention to the connection between the visual images and their content and the ethnographic history of Siberia. The authors also state that the iconic data fulfill the axiological function – it reflects the drawer’s attitude to the subject matter and, consequently, represents the author’s worldview.
