Abstract:
Mapping of fallow lands characteristics is an important task for information support during the process of their return to agricultural use. A method was developed for revealing changes in arable lands use, which is based on topographic maps and multi-temporal Landsat satellite images covering the period from 1970-s to present. The map of current land use (2014) and multi-temporal changes in the Volga river delta agriculture was created using this method. Topographic maps were used for formation of a base field boundary layer, while Landsat-based multi-seasonal color composites served as a basis for thematic map contents. The map displays agricultural arable lands categories and the dynamics of field abandonment. The use of GIS techniques on map creation allowed both localization of different agricultural lands displaying and statistic calculation. It was estimated that in 2014 fallow lands occupied about 82 % (1326 km2) of the total area of agricultural lands in the Volga delta (excluding natural grasslands) and the most active arable lands abandonment have been observed after agrarian reform of the beginning of 1990-s. Map of long-term changes and the modern use of agricultural land of the Volga delta is considered as a starting point for further research.
