Abstract:
The situation with cartographic support for the blind visually impaired in Russia is not a favorable one. The modern technology cannot fully rely on the previous Soviet experience. The article provides a description of a creation experience of a tactile Atlas of the Russian Metropolitan region for people with visual disabilities. It contains paragraphs on the Atlas’ content, design, methods of material presenting. The Atlas has been tested in a unique location – Kislovodsk medical College, with an enrollment of individuals with visual disabilities. This provided an opportunity to conduct interviews with the blind and visually impaired of different medical and educational status as well as age and gender. The comments made by the interviewees were very helpful and taken into account in the Atlas’ preparation.
