Abstract:
The author presents the history of teaching Geodesy at the Mining School, the Mining Cadet Corps, the Institute of the Corps of Mining Engineers, and the Mining Institute during the period from 1774 to 1915. The names of the instructors who provided training in geodesy and supervised summer field practices are given with particular attention paid to the courses conducted by E. A. Koversky and V. I. Bauman. The evolution of the discipline from a branch of applied mathematics to an independent course comprising practical classes in geodesy cabinet and summer field practices is traced, the arrangement process of which is described in detail. These practices took place near St. Petersburg: Petrovsky Island, Pargolovo, Siverskaya station, and later in Pechory, Pskov Gubernia. The curricula of these field practices are especially highlighted. The alumni recollections regarding the geodesy instructors and the educational process are also included. The primary sources for the article are the documents from the Central State Historical Archive of St. Petersburg (CGIA SPb) and the annual reports of the Institute published in the Mining Journal (Gornyi Zhurnal)
