Abstract:
Economic development of lands in areas of active volcanism entails high risks due to periodic tephra fallout during explosive eruptions. For knowledgeable decision making on delineation of zones with special territory use conditions (ZSCTU), scientifically based volcanic hazard zoning is required. In these areas, establishing a reasonable monitoring system is essential for land use, based on hazard assessment and territorial planning practices. It relies on methodological principles of land zoning and monitoring. To determine the site of negative eruptions impact on lands in the said areas, it is necessary to establish the radius of the probable dispersal circle of volcanic materials and their distribution in it, which can be achieved using remote sensing data acquired after tephra deposition. The aim of this study was to identify the boundaries of negative impact on land condition caused by volcanic eruptions, with the mentioned data and comparing the observed plots of vegetation damage with theoretical models of tephra dispersal. The transportation distance of tephra depends on the height of the eruptive column, which is predetermined by the energy in the vent, expressed through the Volcanic Explosivity Index assigned to its characteristic eruptions. The relationship between tephra dispersal distance and eruptive column height is defined empirically; therefore, numerous determinations under various atmospheric conditions following eruptions of many energy levels are required. Employing index images enables detecting vegetation damage patterns around volcanoes and creating hazard zoning maps for areas, which are essential for establishing rational land use regimes within ZSCTU
