The role of a state in the development of the cartography and mapping in Russia is considered. The most significant domestic cartographic works are mentioned. It is emphasizes that the cartographic information is one of the important component of a national information resource. It is taken notice of the organizational aspects to increase the role of a state in the sphere of geodesy and cartography.
