The objective of the paper is to present the concept and structure of the virtual atlas of Russian borderland that makes possible analysis of the impact of borders, processes of integration and political challenges at the international and regional level on the development of Russian regions. It will include the maps at different scales and use multimedia technologies. It will be based on the principles of system crossborder analysis and allow regular updating of information. The paper describes the stages of creating the socio-economic indicators database, which became the basis for the virtual atlas. In addition, authors analyze the methods of evaluating and mapping the barrier function of the state border that is important due to growth of the contradiction between increasing territorial mobility of the population, growing shifts in identity and high barrier borders.
