The map-inventory analysis has been performed for soil sections in available national atlases that are regarded as integral high-quality products, where the current trends in small-scale soil mapping are distinct. Atlases of 30 countries were both electronic and paper ones, mostly of European countries were studied. The variety of soil maps was considered, those of individual soil properties, soil regimes and processes. Special attention in this review is paid to ecologically targeted soil maps, both factual ones and those compiled by means of interpreting information from other maps. Among soil ecological maps, maps of pollution and acidification hazards are the most numerous. The integrity of maps characterizes the diversity of soil ecological functions (services). The increase in number and diversity of soil maps testifies the importance of knowledge on soils in solving the environmental problems.
