The basic methods of state topographic monitoring (the authors’ project) are set forth. The role of topographic maps in various types of environmental monitoring is shown. Relevance of topographic monitoring is vindicated. Issues under consideration: the monitoring essence and definition; its scientific fundamentals; its contents and complex of interrelated segments; its functional organization; monitoring main stages and technological units; its legislative and regulatory groundwork; geocartographic audit.
