Abstract:
The idea to introduce topographic plans and maps as training toolkit in schools was suggested in 1929, when A. F. Belavin published a practical aid for school teachers on the theme. However, practical realization of this idea was impeded at first due to the lack of updated large-scale cartographic materials in sufficient amounts and later due to their inaccessibility because of introduced secrecy restrictions. A limited accessibility of normal maps entailed the production of special “training topographic maps” depicting fictitious terrains. The ease of restrictions concerning topographic maps distribution as well as the development of modern Internet technologies make possible to impart map-usage skills to school children actively and can contribute to a rise of general cartographic culture of wider population.
